John 20:1-10

  • Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb early in the morning.
  • She sees the stone has been moved.
  • She runs to the two disciples and tells them what happened.
    • Simon Peter
    • The other disciple = the one Jesus loved = John
  • V.2: “We” other women.
  • John gets to the tomb first.
  • Simon Peter goes into tomb first.
  • John then goes inside.
  • There is enough daylight for John to see in tomb from the opening.
  • Disciples lacked understanding that Jesus must rise.
  • Disciples went back home.

John 20:11-13

  • Other women are also gone.
  • Mary weeps because Jesus’ body is missing.
  • Two angels appear to Mary.
    • 2 angels usually always appear at very least throughout Scripture also clothed in white (linen)
      • Acts 1:10
      • Ezekiel 9:2
      • Daniel 10:5-6
      • Revelation 15:6

John 20:14-18

  • Mary sees Jesus but at first thinks He is a gardener.
    • Gardeners usually work early in the morning.
  • Jesus calls her by name, and she realizes it is Him.
    • John 10:3, 14-15
  • Jesus warns her not to cling to Him because He will disappear.
  • Calls believers, His brethren.
  • Mary Magdalene goes and tells news to disciples.

John 20:19-23

  • Jesus appears to disciples at night.
  • They were gathered secretly for fear of Jewish leaders.
    • First thing Jesus says is “Peace be with you”.
      • John 14:27
      • Isaiah 26:3
      • Colossians 3:15
      • 1 Peter 5:7
  • Great Commission
    • Matthew 28:18-20
  • V.23: Does not mean we have authority to forgive others sins. But this means when we share the proper Gospel with others, and they reject it, we have the right to tell them they do not have forgiveness of sins.

John 20:24-29

  • Thomas doesn’t believe what other disciples say about seeing Jesus resurrected unless he sees it for himself.
  • Jesus appears 8 days later.
  • Thomas has to see to believe, Jesus says blessed are those who don’t see but still believe.

John 20:30-31

  • Original conclusion of Gospel of John
  • Ch. 21 is added as afterthought for Glory of God.
