  • John Chapter 5 is believed to be out of placement, Ch.4 –> Ch. 6 –> Ch 5 flow better.
  • John 5:1-4
    • Feast of Jews = Pentecost 
    • Pool by the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem
      • Nehemiah 3:1
      • A gate in the wall of Jerusalem repaired under Nehemiah’s leadership (Barbour’s Bible Dictionary 1998)
    • The pool of Bethesda often called house of mercy.
    • Angel stirred water at certain times of the day and the first person to get in water would be healed. 
  • John 5:5-9
    • An infirmed man who could not walk at the age of 38 years caught Jesus’ eye.
      • Verse 5: Word infirmity means paralyzed or lame in the original Greek.
    • Jesus asks him if he wants to be made well.
    • The man had no help to get in the pool, this shows the man had much doubt.
    • Jesus tells him to get up and walk, and then the man was healed. 
    • This happened on the Sabbath.
    • Food for thought: What about all the other people at the pool who were sick?
  • John 5:10-15
    • The Jews begin persecuting Jesus for healing on the Sabbath because it contradicted with OT Law.
      • Exodus 20:10 — Not to work on the Sabbath
      • Exodus 20:11 — God rested from creation, not being God. 
    • The man realized it was Jesus who healed him and informs the Jews. 
  • John 5:16-18
    • Jews persecute Jesus for two charges:
      • Working on Sabbath
      • Claiming God is His Father
  • John 5:19-23
    • Jesus does the will of the Father. 
    • Jesus will perform even greater works.
      • This is talking about Salvation/New Birth.
    • 3 Functions of Jesus:
      • Verse 21: Life
      • Verse 22: Judgement
      • Verse 23: Honor
  • John 5:24-30
    • Everlasting life is obtained by believing in the Son and hears His Word.
      • Hear synonyms: 
        • Discern
        • Listen to
        • Give ear to
        • Be informed
        • Discover
        • Learn
        • Get word
        • Be given to understand
        • Pickup
      • Believe synonyms:
        • Trust
        • Accept
        • Credit
        • Hold
        • Maintain
    • Verse 25 points to Ezekiel 37 — Valley of Dry Bones
    • Verse 26 — see John 11:25, Jesus is the Resurrection of Life
    • John 5:25-29 = Spiritual Death vs. Physical death
    • God’s judgment is consistent.
  • John 5:31-39
    • Jewish Law of Evidence:
      • Deuteronomy 17:6 — death needs 2-3 witnesses
      • Matthew 18:16 — death needs 2-3 witnesses
    • 4 Witnesses of Jesus
      • John the Baptist — John 5:33
        • John 1:23-25
        • John 1:33-34
      • Testimony of Works — John 5:36
      • God the Father — John 3:36
      • Scriptures — John 3:39
  • John 5:40-43
    • People who do not receive Jesus do not receive everlasting life. 
    • Verse 42 — people that are truly saved will have the love of God in their hearts. 
    • Verse 43 — prediction of false Christs.
    • Jesus came in the Father’s name. 
    • Moses was a foreshadow of the Type of Christ — Miracle of Scarlet Thread
    • Verse 47 – Scripture alone is enough.
